Unfortunately, it has been quite some time since I have been able to fish, or have any spare time outside of work for that matter; however, I did manage to get some time to escape for a bit of fishing on Saturday 20 February.
I took the opportunity of some fantastic weather to head to my normal spot on Surfside Beach where I could multi-task by spending time with my family and cast out a few rods of different baits. The surf was slightly rough with the winds coming up from the South, but nothing too challenging for a sand anchor.
Not long after the first cast, the catfish were hitting on both the shrimp and finger mullet that I had out in the water. This was a disappointing start, as generally when the catfish are out, I can catch very little else.
I started my BBQ coals at around 11 AM, and that is when I saw my rod react to something a bit more substantial. I ran over and this time, the catfish was replaced by a 23″ Redfish that hit on the finger mullet.
Satisfied that my luck was changing, I ate my lunch of grilled goodies and went back to fishing. The afternoon was filled with more catfish on the finger mullet; however, the shrimp was landing good sized whiting… a few of which I took home for the smoker.
